Living as an individual addicted to fonts.
You know you have a typography addiction when your friends send you pictures of things and ask what font is being used...
The most recent instance of this happened with my best friend, who texted me the picture shown to the left asking what font was used on the top two shirts. I love being challenged with texts like this- it's almost like font trivia! But I must say I was slightly let down by this request, as the font turned out to be good ol' Copperplate. Too easy. Then, I asked her what she was working on. Turns out she was trying to design a shirt and wanted to use that font. She then explained how frustrated she was that she had to send in her design draft and place an order for the shirts before the design company would send her the final design for approval. |
I suggested that she just send in exactly what she wants so they don't have to change anything. I told her to convert the text layers to shapes and save the document as a PDF. When she asked if she could do all of that in Word, I knew there was an underlying design request.
What makes the title of this blog post even more accurate is the fact that I was excited to help out my friend. When design is a huge part of your school work and what you do for a living, sometimes it's nice to do design work that isn't for a grade or for your job. Putting together the design for my friend was fun and rewarding, and definitely a small creative outlet.

So I designed the two options shown above. The first option uses the Copperplate font that she originally wanted and I used Chaparral for the second option. I personally was hoping she would choose Chaparral, as the UTHSC Dental Hygiene program she is part of is almost all girls and I love the girly flair Chaparral has. Copperplate is classic, but doesn't bring much personality to the design. I was pleased when she told me her classmates also liked the Chaparral font!
So although my love for typography and fonts might be an addiction, it can be rewarding when used to help out a friend.
